Here's a warning about one more con trick that is targeted at those of us who have websites. I received an official-looking email telling me that one of my website domain names was expiring soon (so far, so true). What I needed to do, it said, was just click on the button and my domain would be renewed for me for a year...for $75.
Having just renewed some other names for about $8 a year (via the name registration service I like best, GoDaddy.com), I was of suspicious as to why this one should cost so much to renew. Sure enough, the VERY small print at the bottom revealed that for this sum the company would renew the name with my service provider. In other words, they'd collect $75 from me, pay out $8 to renew the name, and pocket the rest.
I wonder how many unwary website owners (especially those who own only one domain name) fall for this?
