The design sojourn blog’s anonymous designer reflected recently on how he simplified his life and became a better designer. Most of those ideas would apply equally well to writers trying to juggle too many things. Here are two of his principles:
• Clarity: for each project (or aspect of your life) always know exactly what is the next step you have to take, and be able to express it in one sentence.
• Count on the fingers of one hand: limit yourself to five main projects at one time.
To which I would add:
• Use a map: to keep track of everything, write a mind map or a list of what needs to be done for each project.
• In with the new, out with the old: when you buy something new, throw out something old (my friends will laugh at me suggesting this—but, hey, nobody said living up to your principles is easy…)
