An article in the Independent newspaper reveals a hot new trend in publishing: “hic lit.” In other words, confessional autobiographies by drinkers (or, usually, reformed drinkers). Titles include “High Sobriety: Confessions of a Drinker,” “Cleaning Up: How I Gave Up Drinking and Lived,” and “What Did I Do Last Night?” Coming up: “Mother’s Ruin.”
It’s the latest twist on misery memoirs, which up until now have focused on childhood abuse. Don’t rush to write your alcoholic adventures, though, you’ve missed the boat. Personally, I’m starting work on “Forward My Emails to The Priory: Memoirs of a Net Addict.” (Hmm, I was joking, but then again…)
