Here is an excerpt from an interview with Anthony Minghella, who will be much missed, conducted by Shooting People:
“I think one of the strange things about courses and tutors and books is that they suggest there is some other way to be other than the way you are that will launch you in a career. But of course all that anybody wants is your particularness, your specialisness, what is unique about you and so the only course and the only advice that really matters is discover what it is that is particular about the way that you look at the world and try and invest in that and try and grow that individual course because that is what everybody wants.”
He's right--and I would add that for a while your specialness works against you because people like to play it safe. They say "Get me another [fill in the name of a writer or actor]!"--until someone gives you a break and you get a chance to show your specialiness. Then they want you (and eventually they say, 'Get me another [fill in your name]!"
