I'm always fascinated to hear what inspires artists and writers, especially when they may feel blocked. Here is what works for artist Andrea Kobayashi (who sells her artwork at www.akjapan.etsy.com):
“I have a collection of antique postcards from around 1900
to 1930. I don’t know how many there are, maybe 300 or more. I look at them all
the time… I think about time, about near empty streets in central London,
children in suits and gloves, horse-drawn transport, soot-stained cities, and
ancient sites without ‘interpretation centres’ or gift shops.”
I collect advertising postcards from displays in various places, but I'll have to look for some antique ones as well. If visuals stimulate your imagination, give postcards a try.
PS: the www.etsy.com site is a great place to buy artwork at extremely modest prices--it features prints, paintings, craft items, etc. all sold by their creators. I have just ordered a little lino print from one of the artists for the grand sum of $10, approx. £5, including postage.)
