Have you been frustrated by all the messages that say, “You should be using social media like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter,
etc. for your marketing!” but never quite tell you how?
The most they say is that you use it to get people familiar with you and build trust so they will be more likely to buy from you…which is fine, but that leaves the question of how you get them to go to these sites and what's in it for them.
Yes, it does work for bands, where if you have great free music to download at your site, word of mouth can quickly get you a lot of visitors and you can put up information about gigs, etc. But what about the rest of us?
To get people to trust you and get to know you, why not just have a web site on which you offer some free stuff so people can see the quality of your work? You can include some biographical information, and some audios and videos to give a sense of who you are personally, too.
Using Wordpress allows you to construct a fairly sophisticated site without much technical knowledge, which brings down the expense of having a website. (For example, see www.focusquick.com)
Maybe I’m just the wrong generation, but while I agree that something like Facebook is a great way to keep friends and family informed of what you’re up to, so far I think social media marketing is largely a matter of smoke and mirrors.
Am I wrong? Feel free to comment.
