You never did quite master spelling and punctuation? I have a two-part response to that:
1) Don't worry about it.
2) Yet.
To get published, writing does require good spelling and punctuation, but they're not the most important elements by a long shot.
Do you have something to say? Something that will touch the emotions of other people, or help them in some way? A compelling story?
That's the hard part. That's the rare thing.
When you've written that story, you can easily find someone to check and correct the spelling and punctuation for you. I'm not talking about an expensive editor, either. A college student who is getting A's in English probably can do it.
Just be clear that you only want actual mistakes corrected, you don't want your story turned into an academic essay, because what readers want is a story that will make them feel something. And for that, you don't need a degree.
