Why do I say that you have 1001 decisions to make about your writing (or other goal)?
Your 1 decision is what goal you want to achieve.
Your 1000 decisions happen at the times every day that you have a choice of either moving toward or away from your goal. These decisions are sometimes so small that you don’t even notice them.
If your goal is to get a certain number of words written every day or week, the 1000 decisions could include:
· Whether to watch that reality show or spend the hour writing
· When waiting for a bus or the Underground whether to just stand and people-watch or get out a pad and brainstorm a scene or a character
· When your alarm goes off early, whether to turn over and go back to sleep or get up and work on your project
The first decision—what’s your goal?—is crucial, but ultimately it’s your other 1000 decisions that will determine whether or not you succeed. The good news is that when you consistently make the decisions that support your goal, after a while they become habits and no longer require thought or will power. For instance, it took a while, but now going to the gym regularly is second nature to me. So is posting on this blog.
