Here’s a quote from August Renoir:
“I am beginning to know how to paint.”
He was 72 when he said this!
He said, “It has taken me over fifty years of work to achieve this result, which is still far from complete.”
Toward the end of his life he suffered badly from rheumatoid arthritis and become wheelchair bound. An assistant had to place the brush in his hand.
What strikes me most, though, is the humility and patience implied by that quote.
Perhaps when I’m 72 I will be able to say, “I am beginning to know how to write…”
