Thanks to our friends at the Writer Beware! bulletin for an alert regarding something Oprah's magazine, O, is doing: a search for poetry for their upcoming poetry issue. They aren't going to pay anything--come on, Oprah, would it kill you to give an aspiring poet a few hundred bucks for publishing his or her poem in a major magazine?
But that's not the only "shame" part.
The terms and conditions state that Oprah's company will own all submissions, used or not and can do what they want with them in any media. The odds are that they have no plans to do anything with them but it's never acceptable for a contest to take ownership of entries in a contest...not even when it's run in the name of the mighty Oprah.
