Science Daily reports Assoc. Prof. Anne Mangen's observations on handwriting: "The process of reading and writing involves a number of senses, she explains. When writing by hand, our brain receives feedback from our motor actions, together with the sensation of touching a pencil and paper. These kinds of feedback is significantly different from those we receive when touching and typing on a keyboard."
Her research was primarily concerned with how we learn, but it seems to me that this could also relate to writing. If you feel like a scene isn't coming alive, try switching from typing it to writing it by hand.
