Do you ever need to be jolted out of writer’s block, or would you like to know a way to generate new ideas quickly? Here’s one way to do it:
In the previous post I mentioned the site, www.illustrationweb.com. Click on the “Illustrators” tab there and you’ll see a few hundred images.
Pick one at random and assume it has some relevance to what you’re writing. It’s your job to figure out what that is.
For instance, I'm starting to work on a thriller/mystery transmedia project. I’ve been trying to think of ways that I could carry the story into a live event that I’d also video and put on the website.
I decided I’d pick whateveer image was three across and six down on the grid of illustrations at the site. It turned out to be this colourful image from BoomArtwork (their copyright):
This image gave me the idea of having someone at a karaoke night sing a song that gives some kind of clue to the mystery. A handful of London people who have registered their desire to participate would be invited to the night, others would see clips of the night on the website. Their challenge will be to figure out which performance contained the clue.
Give this method a try, you might find new ideas popping up effortlessly!
